Johnson County Kansas
Republican Women's Clubs
There are approximately 400 precincts in Johnson County of which 350 have residential populations. These precincts pretty well follow the voting precincts of each city in the county and each individual's voter card indicates which Ward and Precinct they are in. The Republican Party of Johnson County elects a precinct committeeman and a precinct committeewoman from each precinct during the primary elections in August in even-numbered years. Not all precinct positions are filled due to resignations, moves or if no one files in a precinct. There are currently an estimated 630 elected precinct committee persons serving. All positions will be up for election in August of this year.
Shortly after the November general election in each even-numbered year, a meeting of all precinct people elected in the August primary is held. During that meeting officers and board members of the Johnson County Republican Party are elected as well as a slate of delegates to the 3rd Congressional District caucus. Those delegates, in turn, meet and select officers for the 3rd District and also elect a slate of delegates to the State Republican Party meeting held in Topek the following January. It is at this meeting that the state officers of the Republican Party are elected.
Attendance at the Johnson County Republican meeting every other year is the only official duty of an elected precinct person with one exception. In the event that an elected official, who was elected as a Republican, resigns or leaves offie, the precinct people of the affected posiion are called to a meeting to elect a successor to serve until the next election. If a state representatie or state senator resigns, only the precinct people from that district elect a successor. In the case of a county position, like district attorney, a county-wide meeting is held.
